Join us for the first annual Friends of Missisquoi “Members Picnic”, beginning at noon on Sunday, August 2nd at Knight Point State Park, located in the beautiful Champlain Islands town of North Hero. This is a special event for Friends members and their families (or dates) only. Admission to the park will be free for all picnic goers. The picnic will take place at the park picnic pavilion.
The picnic will kick off with a social hour and snacks. Then, at 1:00, we will be serving a hot-off-the-grill picnic lunch with all the trimmings. BYOB.
After lunch, refuge manager Ken Sturm will speak briefly on the state of the refuge. Ken’s talk will include a comparison of what the refuge was able to offer to the public in the past versus what the refuge can now offer to the public after years of decreased funding and staffing levels. After Ken’s talk, a member of the Friends Board of Directors will follow up with a quick overview of how the Board supports the refuge and plans to do so in the future.
After the talks, there will be a guided nature walk on the park’s Bruce Noble Trail. The trail is an easy one-mile loop along the lakeshore that passes by many impressively large trees. Games such as bocce ball, croquet, and corn hole will be available. You can also enjoy the park on your own. They have an excellent sandy swimming beach with modern changing houses. They offer kayak and canoe rentals, and there are four brand new pickleball courts. You can hike, bird, or botanize on your own. If you want to explore the area, the village of North Hero is home to the iconic and beloved general store, Hero’s Welcome, and also the Kraemer and Kin Brewery Taproom.
